Grade Reporting

General Information

At Middletown High School report cards are published on a quarterly basis throughout the school year. Additionally, students and families should be kept abreast of their standing in a course via regular grade submissions to a predetermined, online platform (i.e. PowerSchool, McGraw Hill, Google Classroom, etc.)

In conjunction with quantitative grading criteria, all students will be informed of classroom procedures, expectations, and grading policies via their teachers' Classroom Management Plans.

Midyear and Final Exams are each worth 10% of the student's Final Course Grade.

Final Course Grades are reported as letter grades and will be derived by taking the average of the 4 quarterly grades combined with the mid-year and final exam grades. Each quarter grade represents 20% of the Final Course Grade with the mid year exam (10%) and the final exam (10%) rounding out the numerical justification.

Incomplete (I) grades may be assigned for work missed during extended absences due to illness or additional extenuating circumstances when approved by building administration. Outstanding work related to "I" grades must be completed within 2 weeks of the student returning to school. At the close of this 2 week period, the "I" grade will be changed to a letter grade that reflects the student's demonstrated proficiency.

In rare circumstances, the following grades may be assigned based on extenuating circumstances at the discretion of building administration:

If a student/parent feels as though one of the aforementioned alternative grades should be considered based on a given circumstance, the high school administration and/or the student's guidance counselor should be contacted as soon as possible.

Class Rank, Valedictorian, & Salutatorian

Class Rank is determined at the end of the Junior year and is cumulative from Grade 9. All students and courses are included in class rank. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are given extra weight in the calculation.

Regarding the determination of the Senior Valedictorian (highest GPA in the class) and Salutatorian (second highest GPA in the class), final GPA calculations for these awards occur at the close of the first semester (second quarter) in the students' Senior year. Students who are in the running for these accolades, will have their GPAs calculated at this time including all in-progress, year long course grades through semester one.

Transfer students will be provided with a transcript analysis that will determine both their course placements as well as current GPA. Senior transfers may elect to not have their previous grades calculated into our system. If this option is elected, the student will not be ranked within the Senior class, nor will they be eligible for Middletown High School academic scholarships or awards.

School transcripts for Grades 9 - 11 and a current Grade 12 report card will be submitted when a transcript is requested.
