I can demonstrate my knowledge of Early American history, government and civics through a TED Talk-style presentation that analyzes the major political and social changes that affected the definition of citizenship and the rights of citizens, and explain how those changes continue to impact marginalized groups today.
At the beginning of the year we took a reading diagnostic on i-ready. My overall score was early 8th grade but in some areas I got above my grade. I am really glad I got this because in the past few years I would rush through the test and get a really low grade. Though this year I put some time and effort into it and I did pretty well.
We are reading the book Just Mercy. It's about the injustices of everyday society. It is told by Bryan Stevenson and he is a lawyer in the late 1900s. He fights against unfair punishments and helps people of color have a fairer punishment. We just finished the book and I thought it was pretty good. Soon we are going to watch the movie. It will be about Bryan Stevenson trying to get Walter McMillian off of the death row.
After we watched the movie I thought it was pretty good, but sad. Soon we are going to have an exhibition about it, about the injustices in our modern day society.
We had a Socratic seminar about the injustices in the book Just Mercy and how they connect to the Constitutional Convention. We had to find quotes in the book and find how they relate to what we were talking about. The quotes I found were, "Black men were 8 times more likely to be shot by the police than white men." (pg 41) This is one of the quotes I shared in the seminar to show how based on your race you get treated differently than others. In the seminar I got a meets because I talked more than 2 times.
In this we had to find research about a topic that we wanted to learn about. I wanted to learn about gender injustices. After we made this page we had to write an email to Mr. Hilding to tell him why we wanted to research this. I got my first pick so I will be researching about the gender injustices.
For our TED talks we had to choose a topic that was unjust. I chose The history of women's rights and how their rights have changed over time. We had to research and find 4 credible sources to support our claim and find information about it. We are going to have an exhibition about it in TED talk format.
In this exhibition We chose Inequalities in the US that we wanted to learn about. I chose Gender inequalities. At this exhibition we had to present our slideshow to our parents. I got a meets on this exhibition. After I presented I think I could have done better because I was reading off my notes and slides a lot so I wish that I memorized my skript so that I could make more eye contact with the audience.
I can apply my knowledge of Westward Expansion, geography and government by constructing a well organized mock trial for or against famous mountain man Kit Carson using logical reasoning, relevant and credible evidence and acknowledgement of opposing claims.
Currently we are reading the book blood and thunder which is about early westward expansion. The main character in this is Kit Carson who, by the end of the book, we are going to but him up to a mock trial.
We have had a Socratic seminar about this book. It was about if we think Kit Carson was an American hero or not. I spoke 3 times which means I got a meets. In the future I would like to make it a goal of mine to speak more.
In this exhibition I was a prosecution attorney. I had to learn many things on how to object to the other team and I had to memorize my script. The exhibition was to see if Kit Carson was a mass murderer or not. I was trying to prove him guilty and I had to examine the character Silas Hargrove so that he could show why Kit Carson was a bad person. Later in the trial a cross examined Kit Carson trying to show holes in his story and the flaws in his character. I was able to do this and my team ended uo winning the trial.
This is where me and my partners wrote our scripts and our plan on how we were going to win the mock trial. I had to direct examine Silas Hargrove played by Stella and we wrote the back story of her character and the important things that we would have to remember at our trial. We also came up with ideas of what the other team might say when cross examining her so that she would be prepared for her cross.
