The Anatomical Pathology Unit provides Histopathology and Cytology services for the state of Melaka. The Histopathology laboratory is concerned with the diagnosis by macroscopic and microscopic examination of tissue. The Cytology laboratory involves the morphologic study of cells.

8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Routine specimens can be sent anytime (during office hours) to the main counter of the Department of Pathology, Hospital Melaka.
Specimens from the operation theatre should be sent to the laboratory by 4.30 pm on the same working day.
Specimens collected after 5.00 pm can be sent to the laboratory main counter by 9.00 am on the next working day (specimen for cytology must be refrigerated at 2-8˚C).
All specimens are to be accompanied by a completed request form PER–PAT 301 in duplicate.
All request forms must be filled up completely and legibly.
Patient’s biodata with relevant clinical information to be written clearly and signed by a doctor.
Previous histopathology and cytology numbers are required if other tissue or cytology specimens have been sent from the patient.
The requesting doctor’s name should be legibly written down together with a contact number as a direct contact by phone can be made if it is urgent.
The name of the medical officer / specialist who did the procedure / operation is also required for easy communication.
If an early report on any specimen is required, the form should be indicated as such. Please indicate on the request form where the results should be dispatched.
Additional verbal requests using existing primary specimens shall be followed by new request form with details of requester, date and time of request. Acceptance of this requests are subjected to specimen stability or according to unit criteria.
All request for Immunohistochemistry staining, Histochemistry staining and Molecular testing are to be accompanied by a completed request form PER-PAT 301 in duplicate.
All Non-gynaecological and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology specimens are to be accompanied by a completed request form PER–PAT 301 in duplicate.
All Gynaecological Pap smears are to be accompanied by a completed request form PS 1/98-Pindaan 2023 in duplicate.
Seminal analysis specimen is to be accompanied by a completed request form PER–PAT 301.
All request forms must be filled up completely and legibly.

Only Pap smear requests can be stamped and signed by nurses.
Previous cytology and histology number is required if cytology or other tissue specimens have been sent from the patient.

All specimen (tissue) sent to and officially received by Histopathology Laboratory will be kept in the unit up to 1 month after the official report is released.
The Histopathology Unit allows the patient to take back their remaining tissue, organ or limb upon request.
For request make before specimen sent to laboratory:
a. The patient or next of kin must make a formal request by filling up 2 copies of Borang Permohonan Mengambil Balik Spesimen Tisu (HM/HP/WI-018/01) and submit to clinician.
b. Clinician to check and counter sign on the forms.
c. Pass one copy of the form to patient for collection of tissue afterwards.
d. Submit another copy of the form together with HPE request to Histopathology Laboratory.
For request make after specimen sent to laboratory:
a. Clinician has to contact Histopathology Laboratory to check the specimen status.
b. If specimen is still available, follow procedure in 3.a to 3.c.
c. If specimen has been disposed, clinician need to inform verbally to requesting patient.
The tissue is released only after the specimen has been reported and validated by the Pathologist.
