The Department of Pathology, Melaka is a hospital based and clinically orientated department with 4 units ie Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Anatomic Pathology (Histopathology & Cytopathology) and Medical Microbiology (Bacteriology & Serology) largely concerned with testing of biological samples obtained from patients. These tests serve to diagnose and monitor diseases or the progress of the disease, for screening and early diagnosis of diseases in asymptomatic patients or as a tool in surveillance of certain diseases. The pathology laboratories shall function at tertiary level.
Pathology Department is involved in the Melaka Cluster Hospital Programme, the department initiated integrated Cluster Pathology Melaka by sharing policy and responsibilities with the aspects of administration including procurement of assets, reagent and consumable, human resources management and quality assurance programmes. Pathology Unit in Hospital Alor Gajah and Hospital Jasin are branch laboratories which are under the same legal entity and implement the same management system.
The Unit of Pathology is an integral part of Hospital Alor Gajah and Hospital Jasin. A pathologist heads the Unit. The laboratory provides screening, diagnostic and consultative services including training and clinical research activities in Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Medical Microbiology and Transfusion Medicine. Unit of Pathology Hospital Alor Gajah and Hospital Jasin also provides screening diagnostics to all primer clinics in Alor Gajah, Jasin’s district and other hospitals.

To provide diagnostic and consultancy services in Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Anatomic Pathology (Histopathology & Cytopathology) and Medical Microbiology (Bacteriology & Serology).
To provide training and supervision in clinical, technological and analytical skills for departmental staff, trainees and personnel from the Government Hospitals, Institute of Higher Learning and other Government Agencies.
To provide consultative services to the Ministry of Health concerning matters related to Pathology services.
To conduct research and development in Pathology and collaborate with other relevant clinical departments in clinical research activities.
The Department of Pathology provides following services:
Chemical Pathology – Routine Clinical Chemistry, Immunochemistry, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, HbA1c and Drug of Abuse Testing.
Medical Microbiology – Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Immunology, Serology, Mycology, Parasitology, Molecular and Virology.
Haematology – Routine and Specialized Haematology.
Anatomic Pathology – Histopathology, Frozen Section, Clinical Autopsy, Cytopathology, Seminal Analysis and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) Clinic.
