Perineal Compresses (Frozen pads) Before your baby is born, it may be useful to prepare a half-dozen or so frozen perineal compresses to use the first 24 hours after birth to reduce swelling and discomfort.
To prepare padsicles:
• Thoroughly saturate and then gently squeeze out excess water from a thin sanitary pad. You can add alcohol-free witch hazel, aloe, and/or lavender essential oil.
• Wrap each pad separately in a plastic wrap and place in a curved bowl in the freezer.
To use after delivery, remove plastic wrap from the frozen pad and wrap it in a clean paper towel. Place the wrapped, frozen pad gently against the perineum and keep it in place until the pad thaws.
