We ask that you set aside 1-2 hours for your first visit. Since we will set up a permanent record with a family medical history, we will ask you to complete a detailed online history form prior to your visit.
We welcome you and your partner to come together for your first visit. If you have been seeing another care provider for this pregnancy, please arrange to have your records transferred to us before your first visit. We encourage you to write down all your questions before your visit so that we can address any concerns you may have.
The certified nurse midwife (CNM) will discuss with you your past health, present status and such things as nutrition, exercise in pregnancy, your family and/or support system. We will then do a complete physical examination including a pelvic exam and pap smear as indicated to assure your health status. We will give you a script for lab tests that are appropriate to where you are in your pregnancy, to be completed at the lab of your choice (including at the Midwife Center).
We set aside extra time during the first visit to get to know you, answer your questions and explain options available to you. Together, we will formulate a plan of care for your pregnancy that could include special testing if needed or desired, such as an ultrasound, genetic screenings, etc. At each subsequent visit, time will be available for questions and discussion.
You are encouraged to bring family, including grandparents and children, or friends to visits as you wish. Having a concerned parent or friend hear the baby’s heartbeat, see the center and/or have their questions answered can help them support you during pregnancy.
The most important part of prenatal care is the job you do. By attending all visits, eating well, living a healthy lifestyle, staying active, learning, asking questions, choosing a pediatric provider, and attending childbirth classes, you enhance your well-being and readiness for birth.
You will be assessed throughout your pregnancy and offered guidance by the midwives.
