Postpartum Hemorrhage – Excessive bleeding can be controlled by the CNM with the same drugs that are used in the hospital. If necessary, an IV can be started. Finally, the CNM can transfer the stabilized birther to the hospital for an inpatient stay if necessary.
Infant Resuscitation – If the baby is having difficulty breathing, the CNM and RNs are trained and certified in both CPR and neonatal resuscitation. The birth center has the necessary equipment to resuscitate and stabilize an infant. A neonatologist at UPMC Magee and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is always available for consultation, and the Intensive Care Nursery is available 24 hours a day if transfer of an infant is necessary.
Vaginal/Perineal Tears – CNMs are trained and experienced in repairing tears and episiotomies using local anesthesia.
