Throughout this Handbook and our other materials, we use both gender-neutral and gender-specific language inclusive of cis-women, trans-people, and gender non-conforming birthing people.
We expect breastfeeding/chestfeeding to be a normal and natural process. Normal does not mean easy, and it takes many people a few weeks to get the hang of it. Just like childbirth, baby feeding requires knowledge of your body, preparation, and support.
We strongly encourage all first-time breastfeeders/chestfeeders and those who have had difficulty with lactation in the past to attend our breastfeeding class. Our lactation nurse will do follow up phone calls for three weeks postpartum to support everyone new to lactation and those who encounter challenges with it in the past.
You may also schedule with a lactation consultant during office hours here at The Midwife Center. If you live far from The Center, you might find support with a lactation consultant at your pediatrician's office, or a La Leche League Group in your area.
We have developed this guide to outline basic steps to successful breastfeeding/chestfeeding and to help you troubleshoot some of the most common problems. This is meant to be a brief guide. The nurses, midwives, and our staff lactation consultant are great resources. Please call for help if you are having any problems or have any concerns.
