Kindergarten read the book, Honeysmoke: A Story of Finding your Color, by Monique Fields. The book illustrates a bi-racial family, whose daughter feels lost in the world. She's not sure who she is, or where she fits in. As a class we had a conversation about all the different skin tones people have in the world. The book calls them names like "honeysmoke." After creating our own handprint and using a variety of new neutral skin toned crayons, kids created their own names for their handprints, and we celebrated them all on the bulletin board.
