Trees with shadow and light

In first grade we read the book , Sky Tree, by Candace Christiansen and Thomas Locker. We discussed various types of trees, and how they change each season. Using watercolors and a straw, student blew on top of their watercolor to make smaller branches. The following week we learned about shadow and light. Students learned about the changing direction of the sun, and how it casts a different shadow depending on the time of day. Shadows and details were added with oil pastel on top of their watercolor designs.
