Frida Kahlo Inspired Self-Portraits

Second graders loved learning about this Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. We looked at five of Frida's many self-portraits and discussed her use of symbols around her face to represents pieces of her life. We learned about the proportions and shapes of the face, and then students started drawing themselves with symbols that represented who they are around the edges. After drawing, we learned four new watercolor techniques to try in and around their portraits.
