  1. Independent reading!

  2. Submit essays.

  3. Complete annotations in groups for "On Turning Ten."

    • Discuss what you think it means.

    • Mark any SHIFTS that you notice in the piece.

    • Highlight at least three devices that you notice (and agree on a couple that you think are REALLY instrumental).

    • In 1-2 sentences, write down what your group thinks the social commentary is and be ready to defend why.

  4. Present!

    • Pick one person to present your groups social commentary to the class. (Be ready to defend your answer!)

    • Starbursts for winner--who has the best evidence for their social commentary!?

  5. How do you use a poem to write an essay? Let's discuss what we learned from the explication essay.

  6. Examine the TDA rubric. What are they looking for?

  7. If time allows, view the Ted Talk. As you watch, document one interesting take-away/thought and one question. Write down what you think the social commentary of this video is.
