BBC Young Reporter
A selected group of Year 9 students have been participating in the BBC Young Reporter Programme. They have been developing their digital literacy skills and learning about the news-making process. Training sessions have given students an opportunity to understand the importance of necessity, accuracy and privacy when publishing stories online.
Congratulations to the following students who have successfully completed the training sessions: David Abaka-Acquah, Helen Adeyemi, Omario Antiqua-Noble, Beatriz Carneiro Da Silva, Jessica Cooper, Anastasia Gibson, Tesan Gurung, Reiss Kearns, Xin Yi Shi.
In February 2022, the students also attended a virtual workshop with a member of the BBC Young Reporter Team via zoom.This was an opportunity for students to talk about their story ideas which they are now preparing to submit to the BBC Young Reporter competition.

As part of our Middle Years Programme, our Year 9 students have been studying the text, ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ by Malorie Blackman. This book has effectively engaged our students as it focuses on real life situations that young people may identify with.
The novel explores the experience of Dante as he discovers that he is the father of a child with his ex-girlfriend. This novel allows our young people to explore the theme of identity and taking responsibility for their actions, which is a valuable life lesson.
Malorie Blackman OBE is a British writer who held the position of Children's Laureate from 2013 to 2015. She primarily writes literature and television drama for children and young adults. She has used science fiction to explore social and ethical issues. Her critically and popularly acclaimed Noughts and Crosses series uses the setting of a fictional dystopia to explore racism. Her book New Windmills Spring sold out within a week of publishing it.
