Careers @TheLeigh

Careers has been a staple part of our tutor time programme throughout Modules 3 and 4. All year groups have had the opportunity to hear from employers or take part in careers based activities.

We have had the pleasure of welcoming a number of external alumni, apprentices and employers from Morgan Sindall Group, Lower Thames Crossing, Oddity Events, Kent Police, The Department for Work and Pensions and Balfour Beatty.

Year 10 - 13 Students participated in a 3 day Networking & Enterprise focused programme with Lizzy Eaton, founder of Oddity Events who presented a virtual-live about her journey from University to becoming an award winning entrepreneur using her skills in networking to build her profile.

All students took part in National Apprenticeship Week (NAW2022) with KS3 focused on what an apprenticeship is and linking their subjects to current apprenticeship programmes.

We were delighted to welcome Guy Robinson from The Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) who gave a presentation on the future of the LTC and the abundance of apprenticeship opportunities that will be available to our current KS3 students when they leave school. KS4 and KS5 focused on the ‘how to search and apply’ for apprenticeships and learnt more on the local labour market and opportunities on their doorstep.

More information can be found here on our Careers Bulletin.

We helped Year 9 in their important GCSE option decisions by spending a week linking their subjects to careers. Year 9 were able to use the Careers Bulletin to learn how core and optional subjects offer so much more in terms of job roles than what they might think.

We celebrated National Careers Week with a variety of activities including visiting the NCW virtual careers fair using research skills to complete a treasure hunt, tackle ‘gendered’ jobs and transferable skills and learn about the world of work. Tutors discussed their jobs prior to becoming a teacher and posters are dotted around the school with teachers' career paths and skills developed.

The Department for Work and Pensions have provided us with a plethora of virtual presentations; Year 7 have learnt about the link between school and work and their current skill sets, Year 8 now understand how their digital footprint may have an impact on their future and Year 9 were made aware of the the questions they should be asking and what to avoid when making their GCSE subject choices.

Year 10 have learnt about employability skills and what that means for them when they head out to work experience in July and Year 11 are now aware of the local labour market and jobs of the future helping them make the right decisions for Post-16.

We are excited to continue our careers programme as we progress into modules 5 and 6 and welcome many more external visitors into the school for live presentations, talks and workshops. If you know of any establishments that would like to work with us, please kindly direct them to our website to learn more.
