Duke of Edinburgh Award

DofE@TheLeigh

For our first season undertaking The DofE Award at The Leigh Academy, we have 30 Year 9 students who will be aiming to complete the Bronze Award this year. They have placed themselves into 5 teams and have over the last 8 weeks been working in those teams and undertaking the necessary training to be able to go out on expeditions.

The training has included menu planning, cooking on a trangia stove, putting up tents, understanding the emergency procedures and navigation skills.

Alongside this they have been working on their sections: Skills, Volunteering and Physical. Everyone has been working very hard during the sessions and we have a great enthusiasm and commitment from the 30 students, which makes for a very enjoyable and pleasant working environment and experience for all of us.

After the Easter Break the students will be working on route planning and understanding what is expected of them when on expedition, with their practice expedition the weekend of the 7th and 8th of May in Kent. The official qualifier expedition is planned for July 2022.

Next year, we hope to extend the program to other year groups and facilitate the Silver Award.
