This course is an introduction to basic chemical principles. Time is spent developing and understanding modern atomic theory, formula writing, nomenclature, equation balancing, predicting chemical reactions, solution chemistry, periodic law, chemical bonding, and the nature of matter, kinetics, equilibrium and oxidation-reduction reactions. A major part of this course is devoted to laboratory activities. Most of these laboratory exercises are quantitative in nature. These activities develop the “how much” aspects of chemistry. The importance of careful measurement is emphasized. Due to the emphasis placed on the quantitative nature of classroom and laboratory activities, a good background in basic mathematics is required. This course provides a good background for those students considering further education, particularly if they are science-mathematics oriented.
