Term 3 Week 3
Kia ora Base 4 Whānau!
Another two weeks has flown by in Base 4.
Attendance:
As mentioned in our last newsletter, our goal this term is attendance. We want to be the highest attending base in the school! So far this term our attendance is 87.8%. Our tamariki have been super excited about trying to reach 90%, checking our percentage each day. We are aiming for this to be above 90%! Please support your child to be at school everyday and to arrive before the bell which is 8:30am.
Buddy Reading
We've been loving buddy reading with Base 2! Base 4 tamariki have taken the time to listen to Base 2 students read, then ask questions, along with reading stories to students from Base 2.
This has been a great time for our base to build relationships with other students in the school we normally wouldn't interact with.
UC4L
This term for UC4L students are focusing on creating projects around a problem they have discovered and coming up with a solution for it. Our Base 4 tamariki identified problems such as racism, bullying, world hunger, rubbish, food poisoning and global warming. So far they have been creating their shark tanks in their UC4L groups. These shark tanks are presented to their kaiako and peers in base to talk about what their topic is, identify the problem, possible solutions they came up with and what their project is going be. To develop our shark tanks, thinking and skills further, students have attended data analysis, budgeting and transdisciplinary curriculum workshops this term.
This is an example of a shark tank that some our tamariki in Base 4 have created.
We will be asking for some parent help with the implementation phase. We would love your help so please let us know if you are keen to help with this!
Here are some photos of the wonderful mahi our tamariki has put into presenting their shark tanks this week!
It has been amazing to see them showing their TREC values during presenting time.
Mitey - Taha Hinengaro
Kauri Flats are lucky enough to partner with Mitey over the next few years to grow and support the mental health and wellbeing of all our students.
The Sir John Kirwan Foundation has designed Mitey with NZ teachers and the University of Auckland to provide an evidence-based approach to teaching mental health education to primary and intermediate aged children.
It is built around the NZ curriculum and embedded into everyday learning, to ensure children are equipped with the age-appropriate skills and knowledge they need to recognise and respond to mental health issues in both themselves and others before they enter teenage years.
Mitey has successfully implemented its approach to schools in Auckland and we are excited to be included.
The following link will take you to Mitey’s homepage www.mitey.org.nz
Our tamariki in Base 4 have done some incredible learning this year during Mitey. The photos below show examples of their artwork. The korus are respresentations of who people who they trust. The takahe is a collection of feathers our tamariki made explaining a time they demonstrated courage.
We are also using a beautiful book titled "How do I Feel" to explore a wider range of emotions. It would be awesome if you could help at home to extend your child's emotional vocabulary by encouraging them to use different words than "I feel good/ bad/ fine/ meh."
