Playbook revised August 26, 2024
The extensive time commitment, the realization that things are probably not going as smoothly as they want and low morale contribute to this period of disenchantment.
Provisional educators begin questioning both their commitment and their abilities to teach the way they envisioned. Be aware that these educators may work many hours overtime and may not take care of their health the way they should, increasing the feeling of hopelessness and anxiety. Many second year educators will feel as if they "should know this by now" or "should have learned this last year."
Reassure them AGAIN that being a master teacher takes time
Help them turn down the treadmill. Help prioritize their work load. Make them feel ok about putting things either on the back burner or eliminating extras all together. Maybe this year isn't the year to get an endorsement or a masters degree.
Remind them that Thanksgiving Break is right around the corner and Winter Break is right behind that.
Make sure they know that they are not in this alone. The work has to be done but there is support at the school and at the district.
