IMPORTANT INFORMATION for FAMILIES
Back to School Night will be Tuesday, August 22 from 6:00-7:30 pm. This is an opportunity for parents to follow their students' schedule, meet teachers and see what the student day looks like on a modified schedule. Please be sure to bring your student's schedule with you. Here is the bell schedule you will follow.
Drop off and pick up are EXTREMELY busy at Drake! Please continue to follow the designated route and know that we are doing everything possible to get everyone in and out of here as quickly and efficiently as possible. Our main priorities are to get busses in and out of here for on time delivery of their students/stops and to try to keep traffic moving on 52nd. Please know that there will be supervision out front until at least 4:15, which is also when traffic typically slows down, so if you can wait to get here until 4:10-4:15, please do! Lastly, please be patient and courteous with all of the other parents and staff members who all have the same goal. Thank you!
On a related note, we have been asked by multiple businesses and community members to remind everyone that these are places of business and people's homes. They cannot have their parking lots, streets and driveways filled up and blocked by Drake parent cars. Please be respectful of this request.
Drake club sign-ups will begin on August 28th. The first days of club participation will begin on September 11th. On August 28th, a school messenger will be sent to all families inviting students to sign up.
View the Drake Clubs flyer HERE. The links to sign up will not be live until later, but here you can view the days of the week and clubs that are being offered at Drake this year!
The Drake Drama Club will be holding a parent interest meeting on Thursday, August 24 at 6:30 PM in the Drake Auditorium. We would love interested parents to meet us in person to discuss together the challenges and options for our new rehearsal schedule. While face to face conversation would be best, if you can't make it in person, you can join via this Google Meet link: https://meet.google.com/sbb-dtun-bau
We will also be giving out other pertinent information for the club and answering any questions you may have. See you in the theatre!
We heard on recent Family-School partnership surveys that Drake parents are interested in getting regular communication about how their student is doing socially and behaviorally at school. The Drake Way Matrix was developed and used last school year and continues to be normed with teachers, so that you can get a clear understanding of how your student is doing in these areas weekly by class. Please make it a priority to discuss this with your student and ask them about how they are doing in these areas OR why they haven't earned all of the points if that is the case. Here is the matrix for your reference.
Teachers put grades for student work into Infinite Campus. This is a how to document on checking grades in the parent portal.

MENTAL HEALTH
Drake's Counseling Team has a Newsletter that will be published at the beginning of each trimester. Please look through the newsletter for information about upcoming lessons, resources and more! Drake Counseling Newsletter Trimester 1
Drake's Counseling Team will give Drake students the option to complete a support assessment September 1st during Access. The assessment will ask students who their trusted adult is, if they want to see their counselor soon and what they may need support with. The purpose of this assessment is to determine what supports Drake students need, what groups the counseling team will offer, and to make sure every student has a trusted adult. Feel free to review the google form ahead of time and let your student know if you do not want them to complete it.
When you signed your student up for school, there was a list of programs you could opt your student out of. In that list was Hazel Health. We highly recommend looking through JeffCo's Hazel Health website to get a better idea of what Hazel Health is and how it is a great resource for Drake students.
Hazel Health's Blog has the latest news, trends, and best practices around supporting student physical and mental health. Explore ideas of industry thought leaders and the Hazel care team.
We want your child to be successful in school, and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, students also need skills for learning challenges, making good decisions, handling strong emotions, and getting along with others.
On September 28th during Advisement class, we’ll begin Second Step® Middle School, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Each week, a synopsis of the lesson and suggested discussion topics for families. Also, other social emotional resources, such as this link for FREE HAIRCUTS, will be provided in this section of the Drake Deets.
Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help students both in and out of school. These include:
Mindsets and Goals: Students learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply research based goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
Recognizing Bullying and Harassment: Students learn how to recognize bullying and harassment, stand up safely to bullying, and respond appropriately to harassment.
Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts, and apply strategies to manage their emotions and reduce stress.
Managing Relationships and Social Conflict: Students learn strategies for developing and maintaining healthy relationships, perspective-taking, and dealing with conflict.
FROM THE LIBRARY
Hello Drake Families! If you are new to Jeffco, we will have a chromebook ready for your child on their first day of school or you may also pick it up during registration on Thursday, August 3rd. Library Orientation will occur during the first three weeks of school through your child's ELA class. We look forward to supporting your child's literacy growth and digital learning!
FROM 6TH GRADE
On August 15th, Drake Middle School welcomed in almost 350 6th graders into our halls and we couldn't be more excited. Some quick tips from our teachers over the years on how to have a great start:
1) Stay Organized (get folders for each class)
2) Charge that chromebook every school night
3) Learn how to contact your teachers. Their emails should be located in the google classroom or on the Drake website.
Feel free to reach out with any questions!
