Calling all coding enthusiasts! Sharpen your programming skills and get ready for the NZ Programming Competition for Girls!
PC4G, or Programming Contest 4 Girls, is an annual programming competition for Year 9 and Year 10 girls in New Zealand. It was started in 2019 to encourage more female students to get involved in Computer Science.
Teams of two prepare by learning Python, often using the free Level 1 Python course on Grok Learning. They are expected to be familiar with basic programming concepts like input(), print(), loops, and lists. Ahead of the contest, participants receive instructions for installing an IDE and get access to practice problems.
The 2025 event will be held on Tuesday, November 18. The contest usually includes a practice session, lunch, and the main competition. It takes place at several university locations across the country, including:
Invercargill: James Hargest College
The goal of the contest is to find talented problem-solvers and get them excited about programming. While top performers may earn a spot at the NZ Olympiad in Informatics (NZOI) summer camp, all participants gain valuable skills and experience.

The NZ Programming Competition for Girls (PC4G) took place on November 18, with James Hargest College proudly hosting for the first time! This annual event encourages Year 9 and 10 girls to excel in Computer Science. Out of 112 teams nationwide, our year 10 students Nancy Ke and Mena Al-Hassani achieved an outstanding result, placing 27th overall. While an Auckland school topped the contest, our girls successfully navigated challenges in basic programming, mastering many of the problems and gaining valuable experience in Python and algorithmic thinking. Congratulations to all participants on a fantastic day of coding!
