AI Policy Statement for Educational Use
Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents exciting opportunities to enrich learning experiences and expand our understanding. In our classrooms, we embrace AI as a tool for fostering autonomy, critical reflection, and creativity among students. Through designated assignments and activities, we harness AI's capabilities to enhance learning outcomes.
Our approach to AI usage is guided by principles of responsibility and ethics:
Respect AI: We acknowledge AI's role as a valuable resource and commit to using it in ways that respect its capabilities and limitations.
Cite its Use: We will appropriately attribute AI-generated content and acknowledge its contributions to our work.
Log Your Prompts: We maintain records of AI prompts and outputs, ensuring transparency and accountability in our use of AI technologies.
Demonstrate Scaffolding: We employ AI to scaffold learning experiences, providing guidance and support while encouraging independent thinking and exploration.
Omissions and Mistakes: Recognizing that AI is fallible, we take responsibility for addressing errors and biases that may arise in AI-generated content.
Commitment to Truth and Integrity: We uphold principles of honesty, integrity, and academic integrity in all AI-related activities, adhering to school standards and ethical guidelines.
In addition to using AI for educational purposes, we recognize the importance of ongoing professional development in AI skills. By continually enhancing our proficiency in AI technologies, we empower ourselves to adapt to evolving educational landscapes and advance our careers.
Furthermore, we embrace a culture of knowledge-sharing, recognizing the value of collaboration and cooperation in AI education. We encourage educators to share their expertise and experiences with AI, fostering a community of learning and growth.
As we integrate AI into our classrooms, we remain committed to ensuring the privacy, security, and inclusivity of all students. By adopting responsible AI practices and fostering a culture of ethical AI use, we aim to harness the full potential of AI as a transformative tool for education. ( N.B. ChatGPT helped in refining this policy, making it clearer and more inclusive.)

General Guidelines for Use of AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) uses natural language processing, has algorithms that can generate discourse, and is self-training. In this course, we will use AI programs to generate some of the work products. However, we will adhere to best practices for fairness, transparency, and accountability and the University’s existing guidelines for ethical writing (see the Student Policy eHandbook: http://www.auburn.edu/student_info/student_policies). In light of this, the following rules will guide your usage:
As students explore the use of AI in writing, it is important to understand the ethical implications and responsibilities that come with utilizing these tools. The following general guidelines should be followed to ensure fair and transparent use of AI tools such as ChatGPT. By following these guidelines, students can ethically and responsibly use AI tools in their writing and ensure that their work reflects their own intellectual efforts and ideas.
(Most of this verbiage was taken verbatim from ChatGPT):
AI tools may be used as aid in the writing process, but not as a substitute of your original work. Always clearly acknowledge the source of any information or text generated by the tool.
Refrain from plagiarizing or presenting AI-generated text as original work, even if it has been modified or edited.
Protect personal information and privacy when using AI tools. Be aware of the data being shared and the potential for this information to be used or shared in ways that may not align with personal values or beliefs.
Take accountability for the content generated by AI tools, including the accuracy and bias of the information. It is important to critically evaluate the output and make any necessary corrections or adjustments before using it in written work.
Specific Requirements for Use of AI in Course Activities and Assessments
Review assignment instructions carefully. Assignments will vary in regard to whether and to what extent the use of AI tools is allowed. Allowable proportions of AI-generated content vs. original work will be clearly specified in the instructions for each individual assignment.
If you utilize an AI tool for an assignment, you must:
Cite the program utilized
Specify the date it was accessed
Include the prompt that was used
Clearly indicate which portions of the work were generated using AI
Optional (?): provide a brief reflection on how the tool was used and the way you have modified or enhanced the AI-generated text
You are responsible for any errors in AI-generated work and points may be deducted
accordingly.
Violations of the rules above will result in disciplinary processes in accordance with the guidelines for academic honesty in the University’s Student Handbook.

Acceptable and Unacceptable Use of AI
The use of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Dall-e, etc.) is permitted in this course for the following activities:
In-Class Activities as indicated by your instructor
Fine tuning your research questions.
Finding information on course topics.
Drafting an outline to organize your thoughts.
Checking grammar and style.
The use of generative AI tools is not permitted in this course for the following activities:
Impersonating you in classroom contexts, such as by using the tool to compose discussion board prompts assigned to you or content that you put into a Zoom chat.
Completing group work that your group has assigned to you, unless it is mutually agreed upon that you may utilize the tool.
Writing a draft of a writing assignment.
Writing entire sentences, paragraphs, or papers to complete class assignments.
Writing Python code to complete class assignments.
You are responsible for the information you submit based on an AI query (for instance, that it does not violate intellectual property laws, or contains misinformation or unethical content). Your use of AI tools must be properly documented and cited to stay within university policies on academic honesty
From Friends University:
Cheating, Plagiarism, Fabrication, and Obtaining an Unfair Advantage... includes unauthorized use of generative AI such as ChatGPT, Grammarly AI, GPT4, or any other system. In this course, all use of generative AI is prohibited except as may be specified in assignment instructions.
From Midlands University:
Technology and generative artificial intelligence tools (such as ChatGPT) are evolving at an incredible pace and will, and currently do, help shape how people, organizations, and institutions operate. The university encourages students to use these programs in appropriate ways in their own lives, in work when appropriate, and in courses where the syllabus states that these programs may be used.
Instructors draft their course expectations surrounding students using technology, and it is the responsibility of the student to adhere to those expectations for class activities and assignments. Students must review the course syllabus to comply with the instructor's policies. The syllabus will outline the policy for the course and how the instructor handles any policy violation.
Plagiarism involving AI-generated content breaches ethical conduct and can have serious consequences. In such cases, we will follow our standard academic integrity policy procedures (previously addressed in the syllabus).
