Italian Diary in Germany

Monday 22.03.2021

Our virtual mobility began on Monday, all participants connected at 10 a.m. After the welcome, Daniel had a short presentation about Bremen, focusing on the cultural and traditional aspects of the city. At first, there was a video in which Daniel was on his bike, showing the itinerary from the airport to the school. We had the sensation to be there, also the photos and the description of the city helped us to feel involved. Then, the speech moved the school and the school labs. Finally, there was a quiz about what we saw in the presentation. Daniel divided the students in 4 groups, named as the characters of the tale “Town Musicians of Bremen”: donkey, dog, cat, rooster. The quiz was amusing and we had a great fun.

On the second day we talked about technical aspects of the project. Daniel had a presentation about battery electric vehicles. It was about the components of these vehicles, some safety measures and their kart in general. It was great to learn lots of new things. Before the ending quiz, he showed us the workshop of the school, giving us the opportunity to saw the working process on the kart: right now, they have installed almost all components, the remaining ones are the battery and battery management system. We hope them to finish it as soon as possible to see their kart assembled.

Electrical motors were the topic of this day. There was a description of the different types and characteristics, in particular we talked about their implementation in BEVs. There was a presentation in which Daniel showed us the principles of an electric motor and some knowledge about magnetism and electromagnetism. It was very detailed with some physics aspects. We appreciated it a lot. Before the quiz about the electrical motor, we showed our pneumatic kart, having a brief presentation about all the components and a showing a video of the test drive with our teacher Giuseppe as pilot.

On the fourth day of our virtual journey the theme was the battery and the battery management system. Daniel explained the principles of the battery, focusing on the li-ion batteries, showing the different types of connections, the charging and discharging system and the implementation of the BMS. After the presentation, he made a comparison with the general requirements of a battery and the requirements of their kart battery. On this day there wasn’t a quiz game but a task: we had to find out a battery for a particular vehicle application, so we searched on internet and solve an easy calculation to find how many parallel and series connections were needed, giving at the end a cost estimate. The French partner and Maltese one had a presentation about their karts at the end of the day. Their work is going on very well.

Finally, on the last day of our mobility, Daniel showed us a video of Bremen. It was very enjoyable; a cause of the current situation we couldn’t be there properly there, the video was very interesting. Then we moved on a presentation about electrical current converters /inverters and controller systems. Like the previous presentations, it was very detailed, with some physic aspects. It was great to enrich our knowledge. On this day the Spanish partner gave some details about their kart developing, after that, at the end of the day we sent greetings to each other, thanking Daniel and the German partner for this amazing mobility.

Final thoughts

Despite the pandemic, Daniel managed to attend a great mobility, giving us the sensation to be there. Now we are waiting for the last step of this mobility, here in Italy. We hope to rejoin with you face to face. We have already given some “spoilers” about our kart, but we are working on some improvements, we hope to see you as soon as possible.
