AS 91901 (3.2) - Apply user experience methodologies to develop a design for a digital technologies outcome (3 credits)
Resources below are to support you in completing the tasks above
Task 1: Create a Mood board
1) Read the task in the task sheet
2) Read through the resource to the right to learn about different types of mood boards and what a mood board could look like in different contexts. E.g. UI design, website, print, mobile
app.
3) Present your mood board however you wish.
Task 3: Personas
1) This task is designed to help you unpack and identify the needs and challenges of the end user.
2) Read the task in the task sheet
Look on the slide for an example
Task 4: Defining the project/Writing the Brief
a) Read the task sheet for what you need to include for this task.
Purpose
Requirements
End-users (names & roles)
Implications that are relevant to your project and context
Task 5: Investigation of UX methodologies
Present your research and examples of how the methodology could be applied in your Google slide. There should be a slide for each methodology. The methodologies you should focus on are:
User Research & Personas
Usability evaluation
Visual design
However, you could focus on others.
Example of a labelled interface showing visual design principles
Task 6: Applying UX methodologies to develop Initial Designs
A) Content Planning:
Open a Google Doc and make notes of the content for each page. Use spell check.
Create a folder to store images/media.
B) Design Sketches:
Sketch design ideas for your model, applying the selected UX methodologies.
Start with an inspiration board of existing outcomes to guide your design.
There are A3 design sheets available to help with your thumbnail sketches. There should be at least three thumbnail sketches for each outcome.
Grade Requirements:
Achieved - Three thumbnail sketches of ideas for each outcome.
Merit - Designs should show how feedback/ testing has been used to improve the design and how the different outcomes will have a similar look. This may include:
Evidence of teacher feedback on the functionality of the design.
Further internet research on a specific detail that leads to improved design.
Data from user testing on the suitability of the features included in the design.
Explained end-user considerations and how their design meets these.
Note: These should be just pencil sketches at this point.
Task 7: Selecting an Idea
Select an idea to continue with
Put a tick next to it - Make sure it is clear what design or parts of a design you are continuing to develop
Explain why this is an appropriate design, refer to how it meets,
The purpose
End-user requirements (e.g. easy to read/ navigate, accessibility)
The requirements of the project.
Task 8: Modelling the design & Applying UX methodologies
Take the selected sketches of your idea and make them into storyboards if you are using animation. Create blueprints for static models; these must have a front and side angle.
Using the selected designs, trial potential fonts, and colour combinations and sketch any graphics you might need or take photographs of objects that you could use for texturing.
Get end-user feedback and record it.
Make changes to improve the design based on feedback, UX methodologies and testing. Record the changes.
Task 9: Presenting the final design
Present the final design, blueprint and/or storyboard for your outcome.
Present the font choice and sizes for heading, subheading and paragraph text if applicable.
Present the selected colour scheme.
Present any sketches/ images that you will turn into graphics.
Explain how the designs meet the purpose and requirements.
How do the designs address end-user requirements? (E.G. Easy to read, contrast)
Task 10: Evaluation
Evaluate how user experience methodologies were used in developing the chosen design. Including,
How were they incorporated into the design?
How did they improve the design process?
How effective were they?/ Any challenges?
Evaluate how the chosen design addressed relevant implications. Including,
Giving reasons why the design will enable a fit-for-purpose digital outcome.
Using evidence to evaluate how their design addresses implications such as ease of use, technical feasibility, functionality, reliability, and privacy.
A) Justify UX Methodologies:
Why were the chosen UX methodologies used in developing the design?
How does your research link to the selected UX methodologies?
What evidence supports the selection of these methodologies?
B) Justify Design Suitability:
How is the design suitable for its purpose and end-users?
Why were specific design decisions made regarding elements like images, graphics, and fonts (legibility and readability)?
How do the instructions and features enhance the intuitiveness of the digital outcome?
C) Future Development:
How might the design be further developed in the future?
What changes would refine the look and functionality?
How will UX methodologies be used in the next development stage?
