Delano Potter & Co.

The iconic history of The Boston Tea Party made Boston the city of tea.  Meeting the expectations and perceptions, there was a tea and coffee shop on 45 Commercial St in the early 20th century North End. The famous Delano Potter & Co. Inc. merchant shop imported teas and coffees to provide the essential caffeine for the Bostonians of North End.

Collection of Advertisements

The small, concise advertisements of the company were prominent throughout the early 20th century in The Boston Globe.  There were a variety of teas and coffee that were showcased in the advertisements that attracted many consumers. Advertisements of teas and coffee not only attracted Bostonians of the 20th century but are allowing us to peak over teas and coffee that were widely enjoyed.

Moreover, The Jungle Chop Tea Ooloong Tea from Formosa of Taiwan, reveals the wide trade business reaching the sea of Asia.

Along with advertisements,  the company held contests that rewarded $5.00 each week for filling in the fifth line of the limerick provided. These advertisement styles attracted many attendees all over Boston.

PRESIDENT HOPKINSON

The President of Delano Potter & Co. was a Bostonian named Walter B. Hopkinson. Hopkinson was born in 1866 and Eleanor S. Hopkinson. At a young age, he was interested in teas and coffees that later he became affiliated with.  The company was run by President Hopkinson from the late 1800s until his retirement in 1929.

Besides importing and selling teas and coffees, Delano Potter under Hopkinson was associated with other events and organizations. A notable event during the 1920s was the Great Vermont Flood of 1927. Along with other gift money from Massachusetts, Delano Potter & Co. donated $250 dollars to help Vermont.

Mrs. Filbert's Margarine

Mrs. Filbert’s Margarine was one of the most famous margarine brands that represented 20th century New England. The margarine was widely distributed in many merchant shops and groceries all over New England. Although the company no longer produces its products, Mrs. Filbert’s products were at the peak during the early to mid 20th century.

On 33 Commercial St, the Chapin & Adams Co. delivered Mrs. Filbert’s Margarine for customers in the North End. The company advertised vigorously, attracting people who were visiting the Faneuil Marketplace to purchase the margarine that "tastes so good"

Mrs. Filbert's Margarine delivered by Chapin & Adams Co. was advertised very well by targeting a specific group of people. Unlike the other advertisement that was very short and concise, Mrs. Filbert's Margarine's advertisement was rather long, like a magazine post. Being the condiment to cooking, Margarine was consumed widely by households and females. Use of longer and drawings of mothers is one marketing way that Mrs. Filbert's Margarine provided.

Liberty Pure Food co.

If you have the perception that Bostonians are healthy, here is a shop on 46 Clinton St. that fulfills the perception. Liberty Pure Food Co. was a merchant shop that delivered healthy options for a breakfast table. The company advertised with slogans like "Too Much Meat" and "Sweet as Nuts" to attract people. The healthier option of oat-nut breakfast was processed and made by the Liberty Pure Food Co. The company manufactured good, healthy food that fought against the high meat consumption of Boston.
