Financial District / South
From the 1880s through the 1930s, the southern extent of Boston’s financial district was marked by wealthy land ownership, various family-owned businesses, constant change and development of land, and Irish-Yankee rivalries. Some of these prominent Boston property owners included the Phillips family, the Wentworths, the Sears Family, and Arthur and Sarah Pickering. Noteworthy and triumphant businesses were primarily linked to the fish oil and cotton industries, sugar refining, and shoe manufacturing. Major changes in these landscapes were due in large part to the nature of man-made land and widening streets, as well as elevated railways and a series of fires.
