Salem Street Over the years

Salem Street experienced major changes over time. The street slowly converted from a residential area to a bustling storefront-focused street, while also conforming to the expansion of Cross Street. While the street adapted physically, for example becoming a more vehicle friendly street, the changes within the community better define its true growth over time.

the culture shift: first residents vs. now

The North End contains a lot of different culture and charm today, but is mainly defined by its Italian restaurants and food markets. However, before the Italian community dominated this area, other cultural groups were sprawled all across the North End, including Salem Street.

The first immigrants documented in the North End were the Irish, and quickly the Portuguese and Swedes followed.

It was not until the 1870s that the Jewish community grew enough in the North End to drive other previous immigrant groups out. Their children flooded the populations of local schools and the local business scene revolved around Jewish family-owned storefronts.

By the census of 1900, the Italian community had come to dominate the North End, slightly surpasseing the Jewish community. The Italians had flooded any and every tenement building that became available, and this started their legacy that still holds true today.
