Boston’s Financial District was home to a diverse array of businesses, infrastructure, and architecture. When it came to retail in the District, family businesses were often inherited across generations, becoming pillars of the community. The wharves served as the epicenter of shipping and trade, connecting the community to the international marketplace and creating ample employment opportunities. Ultimately, the businesses of the neighborhood were lost in the addition of the Central Artery, creating a divide between the wharves and commerce.
