South Station Area
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the area close to today's South Station primarily established itself as a commercial district. This reputation was achieved through the construction of South Station and other modernization efforts. The Leather District in particular was one major commercial interest that arose in several of our parcels. It flourished due to its close proximity to South Station and the Boston Harbor. Tragically, both the Leather District along with other commercial interests in this area were damaged by a great fire in 1872. This resulted in temporary displacement/relocation for individuals and businesses in order to rebuild. Negative repercussions of urban change such as displacement is another major theme in this group's parcels. In terms of residential interests in the area, there was a mix of domestic residences amongst commercial buildings. In regards to specific demographics, these residential neighborhoods were mainly multi-generational, Irish families.
