March 8th is International Women’s Day - a time to focus on the many contributions that women have made and continue to make for society. Many of us are lucky enough to be surrounded by the strong women in our lives. For this special occasion, TAB students and staff also took part in a project on International Women’s Day when the school community honoured the wonderful women in their lives by writing their names on a poster with the prompt that read: who are the most powerful and INFLUENTIAL women in your life?

This time of year - according to the the US National Women's History Alliance - is about the “women in every community who have devoted their lives and talents to producing art and news, pursuing truth and reflecting society decade after decade”. This day highlights the many impactful women who have come before us, as well as those who continue to make their mark today.
In politics and law, we look up to leaders such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Anita Hill, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. We thank them and many others for their hard work and contributions.
We would not be living in the world we do today without our female activists, groundbreakers, and champions of equity; those who have taken it upon themselves to challenge the status quo and pave the way for young girls, women, and people around the world. Notable names in this area include the resilient Harriet Tubman; the defiant Rosa Parks; the leading suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst; the brave advocate for education, Malala Yousafzai; climate activist Greta Thunberg; and social activist Sunitha Krishnan among others. Their courage and contributions continue to make a positive impact on civil rights, women’s rights, education, and more.
Maya Angelou, Anne Frank, Margaret Atwood, Oprah Winfrey and Rupi Kaur are some notable female authors who have made incredible impacts through their written word.
Of course, there are many incredible athletes to look up to, including tennis champ Serena Williams, Olympic track and field champion Wilma Rudolph, and American footballer Megan Rapinoe. Their tenacity and strength is something to admire.
Our films would not be what they are without the incredible female actors who star in them. In this area, we honour stars like Sandra Oh, Meryl Streep, and Emma Watson.
From former First Lady and accomplished lawyer Michelle Obama, to the charitable Princess Diana, there are so many more women who have had a unique and overarching impact on society. This month especially, we encourage you to reflect on the constant contributions of the women that surround us.
