The name of our school, Haven Academy, is not only named after the Mott Haven neighborhood that we call home. We are named “Haven” to evoke the stable and safe community that we want our school to be for all our students, team members and families. We want Haven Academy to be the most predictable, reliable, safe, and understanding space of kindness that we feel our students deserve. From the deep thought we put into our academic program through the innovative work we’ve put into a groundbreaking social emotional experience for students, our goal of being a Haven is woven through all tenets of our program.
The Mott Haven neighborhood is situated in the South Bronx and is steeped in deep traditions within a multi-cultural community of native New Yorkers alongside immigrants. The area is known for celebrating food, music, and the arts and contains three of the Bronx’s 11 Historic Districts; the Mott Haven Historical District was the first area in the Bronx to receive this designation. Considered a historical “piano district” for the high number of piano factories once in the area, Mott Haven is also the home of the first public library in the Bronx and the largest park in the South Bronx (St. Mary’s).
Haven Academy is the first and most advanced school specifically designed for children in foster care and the child welfare system. In the absence of traditional public schools that could fully respond to the unique needs of child welfare-involved youth, Haven Academy partnered with The New York Foundling in 2008 to become the first effort of its kind in the country. Haven has grown to serve students in PreK - 8th grade in a trauma-sensitive educational environment that addresses and reduces the barriers to academic success. 100% of our scholars are resilient, resourceful, and independent leaders of tomorrow.
Our Mission
Haven Academy is redefining school by intentionally designing spaces and programs to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of all children, with a focus on those impacted by the child welfare system. United with our scholars and their families, we aim to dismantle systemic barriers to success through comprehensive support services, responsive curriculum, predictability, and an emphasis on voice and choice. We lead with empathy and forge deep relationships to build a better future in service of our resilient, resourceful, and independent scholars.
Our Vision
We strive to create empathetic educational spaces that serve as playgrounds for exploration and self-discovery, so that we can more fully engage in critical reflection of the larger world and fashion one that is more inclusive, responsive, and equitable for all.
