Haven’s Social Emotional Learning approach follows a 3 Tiered Model, with Tier 1 being universal to all students at Haven. Social Emotional Learning Time (SELT) and Advisory reach all students at Haven. This dedicated time - SELT for elementary students and Advisory for Middle School students - is designed to build community and focus on building skills.
Social Emotional Learning Time (SELT) is taught by Haven Academy Social Workers with close collaboration and participation by classroom teachers and happens 1x a week for 20-30 minutes in Elementary grades (less time with lower ES grades). Teachers reinforce the skills learned during this classroom time at different times during the week. SELT is an example of how Haven blends evidence-based Social Emotional approaches by incorporating the RULER approach to emotional recognition, expression and regulation.
Advisory is specifically designed for Haven Middle School students in a structure rooted in restorative justice/practice that fosters connections and relationships between students and adults. Advisory facilitators are the go-to person for the students in their small groups and can be a Haven social worker, a guidance counselor, or a teacher. Lessons are planned out week-to-week with flexibility built in to talk about different topics as students go through lots of changes.
