Four key tools that we use from RULER are the Class Charter, Mood Meter, Meta-Moment, and The Blueprint. While these will look different by grade, they all contribute to the school-wide focus on social-emotional learning for the whole school community.
Class Charter: Created within the first two weeks of school, the class charter is a contract developed and agreed upon by students identifying what they need from their classroom community. Rather than a traditional “rules of the classroom” the class charter is a positive, living document outlining “we will” agreements rather than “don’t do.”
Mood Meter: A tool for building self awareness and awareness for other people’s feelings. People can plot their feelings along the “energy” and “feelings” axis.
Meta-Moment: A tool used with older kids for them to stop and take a deep breath to recognize their emotions, think about their desired outcome, and move from an unhelpful reaction to a helpful response to get to that outcome.
The Blueprint: a problem-solving tool for situations and conflicts in the past, present, and future. The Blueprint is a tool for overcoming conflict each person to look at the conflict from the other person’s perspective as well as their own.
After implementing RULER at Haven, we’ve seen evidence of growth in a number of ways:
Increased knowledge of emotional vocabulary
Increased self-awareness
More empathetic toward others
Better able to problem solve
Moving toward better self regulation
Adults using the mood meter to start conversations and set tone during meetings
Adults regularly engaging in conversation about the RULER tenants and the connection to our culturally competent instruction
