At Mott Haven Academy Charter School we believe math learning should hold all students to high expectations, be student centered and equitable while cultivating joy and confidence. 

We Believe: 

• in the power of lifelong learning and collaboration within each child’s learning community  - students, families, teachers and administrators.

• mathematics is a meaning-making endeavor where students are encouraged to make sense of problems and persevere when solving them.

• in student-centered instruction that is anchored in the development of trust and tailored to individual student needs.

• rigorous math instruction means a balance among teaching procedural skills, fluency and the conceptual understanding of mathematics. 

• assessments are for learning and not just a measurement of learning.

• partner with students and families in the learning process and commit to ongoing professional development. 

• help students connect mathematics to their current lives  and make sense of the world around them 

• amplify student voices by facilitating mathematical discourse and collaboration – both with teachers and among peers – orchestrated around appropriately challenging tasks.

• implement high quality tasks that support a productive struggle, reasoning and problem solving 

• build procedural fluency from conceptual understanding

• utilize a variety of assessments both informal and formal  teaching methods and interventions to provide flexible, differentiated and balanced instruction (Just Right Games, small group instruction)

•  use data as a critical tool for effective, student centered  planning
