In addition to a strategically developed scope and sequence and dedicated SELT and Advisory time each week, the Haven model reinforces and supports SELT and Advisory in a number of ways.
Reinforcing SEL Skills: While SELT and Advisory is facilitated at a specified time each week, teachers and other Haven staff are constantly reinforcing the skills taught during this time. For example, SELT curriculum is aligned as closely as possible with ELA standards, providing teachers with the opportunity to reinforce and solidify the skills taught by weaving them into the daily messages and culture of the classroom through the following; books, character units, morning messages, morning meeting, closing circle, etc.
Prioritized in Staff Meetings: Teachers and social workers have the opportunity to coordinate and connect about SEL learning time at the end of each bi-weekly Student Update Meeting (SUM), and the social work team joins Grade Level Meetings once a month to specifically focus on SEL.
Valued as Highly as Academics: In addition to the academic assessments reflected on a traditional report card, Haven includes an assessment of SE competencies on all student report cards. Haven uses the Devereux Students Strengths Assessment (DESSA), a standardized, strengths-based assessment in addition to Haven teacher observations in order to get an accurate assessment of student competencies.
