Tier one level supports are universal interventions that are proactive, preventative, and include all students. These supports are good teaching practices such as creating and teaching school-wide positive behavior expectations, teaching and positively reinforcing appropriate behavior, establishing and consistently providing clear consequences for inappropriate behavior, and using data-based decision making. Three key components of the Tier one level supports are:
1.) Haven Expectations: Haven explicitly teaches and visibly displays 5 school-wide expectations to ensure that scholars know what is expected of them and ALL adults hold scholars to the same, high behavioral standards. Each of the expectations has an animal to represent it and help kids remember (shown below) Scholars are positively reinforced when they follow expectations and are given clear consistent consequences for not following expectations.
Be There, Be Ready
Be Responsible
Be Respectful
Be Safe With Hands and Feet to Self/Personal Space
Follow Directions
The school-wide expectations look different by age and physical location in the school building.
2.) Positive Language: At Haven we use common language that reflects our deep belief in the importance of empathy in our school community. We use techniques from the a few proven approaches (including Responsive Classroom and Love and Logic) to positively frame our interactions with students and amongst Haven staff.
3.) Positive Recognition System: The purpose of this system is to celebrate students and staff for engaging in behaviors that are consistent with Haven's school-wide expectations.
Grades K-5
Spirit Tickets: Spirit Tickets are a component of the positive recognition system used in grades K-5. In order to motivate students to always maintain the expected behaviors at Haven, Spirit Tickets are given to students when they are engaging in positive behaviors and meeting Haven’s expectations. All staff are encouraged to distribute tickets throughout the day (e.g. specials, recess, lunch, hallway, breakfast). Every year, there is a school-wide competition for that year’s spirit ticket design and classes votes on their favorite design.
Each instructional K-5 classroom has a clear plastic classroom bin where students place their tickets. Each classroom bin has a line indicating their class goal. When the classroom reaches their goal, they earn a whole-class incentive (e.g., movie, ice cream party, dress down day). In addition, one scholar from each grade level earns an individual incentive during a combined grade level drawing at each monthly Community Meeting. The staff member who wrote the ticket also receives an incentive. Surprise incentives (e.g., Pie in the Face) occur two to four times per year and are unannounced to encourage students to always follow Haven's expectations.
Grades 6-8
Kickboard: Haven Middle School uses Kickboard to track and reinforce positive behaviors. On a biweekly basis, students receive an individualized print out of their behavior from the previous week. Each on-vision behavior is logged as a positive point. Students can redeem their points for items and experiences throughout the school year.
