Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
By myself
What materials will you need?
Aluminum foil, cardboard, scissors, water, and pennies
What is your plan to create this project?
I will build a boat with aluminum foil and other materials to see how many pennies it takes to sink them.
What unique qualities will your project have?
It will be my design and my trial and error as I construct this boat.
I began working on my website and brainstorming what kind of boat I want.
I began working on a boat design
I continued working on the boat and tested it.
I made a better boat design
I finished designing my boat and tested it
I worked on my reflection.
Reflection
Using aluminum foil, scissors, pennies, a ruler, and water I created two different boats. I wanted to see how many pennies I could put in the boat before it sank. I also wanted to try and test my ability to improve a design I make.
During this process, I learned how to better something I created using self-feedback. I also learned how to design a stronger boat. I learned these things by testing my boat design and then improving it by trying to find out what makes the boat better.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative designer because I created my own original design. It also ties to this because I stayed with a task until it was completed, in this case the task was to improve my boat design.
A challenge I overcame on this project was knowing nothing about boats before this project. I was able to do it by trial and error. I was also able to overcome this challenge by looking at what kinds of boats hold the most people.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change my 2nd boat design. The reason why I would change it is because I would have made it thicker on the bottom. Another reason I would change it is I would have made smoother folds, I believe this would have been better for the boat rather than the crinkly folds.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. It connects to this because I design a boat and improved on my design.
My project connects to careers in engineering because it uses trial and error to create a design. It also connects to careers in technical design because I used prototype development to create my final boat. I used prototype development because I started with one prototype and after testing it improved on it.
