Year 6 pupils at Leigh Academy participate in the PYP Exhibition each year. It offers them a chance to delve into a worldwide issue that they choose personally, often linking to a previously studied Unit of Inquiry; pupils collaborate in small groups to present their learning in a range of interactive formats. Through this process, our students continue to develop the learner profile attributes, particularly being principled and communicating with others.
Theme: Who We Are
Central Idea: The choices we make may have consequences on who we are and who we become.
Our Year 6 pupils take ownership over their exhibition projects and work to a schedule to complete them, with many children choosing to create additional content at home. Each group works with a mentor to discuss what has been produced each week and choose a focus task to complete over the following week. Working alongside mentors has encouraged the children to remain disciplined during their learning.
Parents and Year 5 students are invited to the Year 6 classrooms/playground, where children set up their exhibition projects. The children do a wonderful job of inviting visitors to their presentations and encouraging them to participate in their learning. This includes reading information, taking part in online and paper based quizzes and watching videos the children had recorded.
The PYP exhibition is an excellent opportunity for the children to show agency in their learning, by presenting it in different formats, and sharing their passion with other members of the school community. It will undoubtedly help to prepare them for further independence in their move to secondary school.
