YEAR 5 INQUIRE AT THE SCIENCE MUSEUM!
Year 5 recently had a fantastic trip to the Science Museum in London as part of this term's Unit of Inquiry. The visit provided an exciting opportunity to deepen their understanding of medicine and aviation, with both areas linking closely to what the children have been learning about in class.
One of the highlights of the day was exploring the History of Medicine gallery, where pupils were fascinated by the evolution of medical practices and the incredible advancements made over time. From early surgical tools to modern breakthroughs, the exhibits sparked curiosity and plenty of discussion.
The aviation displays were equally inspiring, with students marvelling at the development of flight and the science behind it. A truly memorable day of hands-on learning, discovery, and wonder!
YEAR 5 VISIT LULLINGSTONE COUNTRY PARK
Year 5 students at Leigh Academy Hartley embarked on an adventurous and interactive Provocation Day to kick-start their latest learning inquiry. The day at Lullingstone Country Park was designed to help pupils understand how systems connect and work together to achieve goals, while also developing essential teamwork and communication skills.
The day began with a series of engaging communication games, challenging pupils to collaborate effectively and problem-solve as a team. These activities encouraged students to think critically about how clear communication and cooperation can make a significant impact when working towards shared objectives.
One of the highlights of the day was a hands-on cooking session where students made delicious pizza wraps. This activity not only focused on practical skills but also emphasised the importance of following instructions and working efficiently within a group.
Next, pupils ventured into the great outdoors, where they had the opportunity to build dens and explore the natural beauty of the local country park. Guided by Army Sergeant Seagers, the walk around the park offered an exciting blend of physical activity, exploration, and lessons in resilience and leadership.
YEAR 5 TAKE PART IN A VIRTUAL NATIONAL GALLERY WORKSHOP
In Module 1, we had a virtual workshop with the National Gallery to talk all about myths and legends and how they can be displayed through Art. This linked really well with our Unit Of Inquiry as we have been inquiring all about the different ways stories are told. The children got to listen to a soundscape that was made by the gallery to try and envision what some of the paintings were going to be before we saw them.
YEAR 5 BECOME AUTHORS WITH IAN MACDONALD
Year 5 were lucky enough to receive a visit from an author named Ian MacDonald. During his visit, Ian discussed with the children how to become an author and what it's like being an author. We then had the opportunity to spend two days creating our own version of his published book- 'The Mummy's Finger.' Ian discussed with each class what each chapter should be including and we focused on a different skill for each one. The children also got to take part in some role play which they thoroughly enjoyed.
At the end of the sessions, Ian had brought in some books for the children to be able to purchase! They were all very excited and have been reading the books since!
