The Colors of Us:
A Study of Culture
Kindergarten students will paint their self-portraits as a culmination of their expedition, of learning cultures around the world as well as our community. Students will be exposed to various cultures through a focus on literature. Students will also write a story about themselves, including where they are from.
Their final product is displayed in three formats: a story, a paper self-portrait, and a self-portrait painting. The story will be written as an “all about me” story to go along with their self-portrait. The canvas displays the way that each student represents himself or herself, while also showcasing what makes them special. The driving book “The Color of Us” by Karen Katz, drives each student to find their “colors.” Each student discovers that they are not just one color, but a variety of shades of colors.
