African Water Crisis
In 7th grade, students take Social Studies the first half of the year and they take Life Science the second half of the year. In the fall, when students were in Social Studies, they worked on an "Africa Water Project." The purpose in that project was for students to identify water problems in Africa and work out solutions to fix the contaminated water problems in Africa. Students identified the fact that there is unequal water distribution and that contaminated water is a major issue that causes diseases and even death. In Life Science, students have learned about cells and the function of each organelle in plant and animal cells as well as the structure and function of each human body system. They have worked on numerous hands-on projects throughout the semester that allow for students to make the connections between the function of cells and the importance that cells have on each body system. Students have also learned how energy is transferred through the body. Students demonstrate understanding about nutrients and how nutrients are crucial to each of our body systems in order to survive. Groups have been tasked with creating a presentation on the purpose of clean water for the cells in our body and how our cells fight off infection and disease. Throughout the semester, students have conducted research and studied the significance of clean water and why it is so important to supply our body with the nutrients it needs in order to function properly and survive.
