Play is more than just fun — it's how young children explore the world, build skills, and connect with others.
Play helps a child....
build confidence
develop social skills, language, and communication
learn about emotions and social thinking
develop physical skills
feel loved, happy, and safe
connect and refine pathways in their brain
Types of Play:
Children engage in different kinds of play as they grow. Sometimes a child’s play may look “different” compared to their peers or may not look like they’re playing - it’s important to know that all play is okay!
Children can be supported to play in what they are interested in and what brings them joy. Adults can model more appropriate actions or incorporate other toys into the play.
For example, if your child enjoys watching the wheels of a car spin, you can model how to drive the car on a track.
Real play is not engaged through video games or other electronic devices - turn off or remove devices during play time.
