Gross motor as a foundation

Physically play your way to better finger skills by developing BIG muscles to support more controlled little muscle (finger) skills.

Children are reliant upon good physical or postural skills. Developing and maintaining strength and endurance are essential to setting one up with a foundation strong enough to support fine motor skill tasks.

Tips to help encourage children to participate in physical activity:

  • make the activities fun

  • have family members or peers involved in the games or activities

  • play games that are not competitive i.e. no winners or losers

  • reduce other activity options for defined periods of time (i.e. no screen time in the afternoons)

  • extend the play duration by joining several games together (i.e. an obstacle course)
