Tips for success when encouraging the reluctant participant:

• • • Encourage short playful sessions often. 

      • • • Encourage the play and not the work. Children learn  and develop skill much faster when they are playing.

    • Participate with your child! You are an important model for your child.

      • • • note: once your child feels successful and is highly interested in an activity, you may be able to supervise close by and step-in to facilitate as needed.  But remember the value in participating with your child.  

    • Allow for task repetition (i.e. you may present the same activity every day for several days, and then  regularly if your child showed interest and joy in the task

      • • • this allows for your child to watch an adult participate and gather ideas of what they can do. 

          • this also allows your child to practice and development nice motor plans

          • be creative. feel free to change elements of the activity to keep it exciting, ie. you may want to change the color or add an additional "tool" or extend on an idea.

    • Provide elements of fun! Include items of interest or favorite themes/characters  (i.e. include cars if your child loves cars)
