The GPHS girl's soccer season has kicked off, and they are five games into the season. Here in Grants Pass, the community takes a lot of pride in soccer. The GPHS varsity team started the season off with a retreat to Etna, California instead of attending a jamboree.
The GPHS varsity team is 1-3 on the season already, with three losses. According to the official OSAA page, those were: North Medford 2-3, South Medford 1-3, South Eugene 0-2, one win against Willamette 2-1, and another win 2-0 to Roseburg. This year's lady cavers are a senior-heavy team with eight seniors. Out of the seven teams in the 6A- Southwest conference, the Lady Cavers contain the most seniors on a team.
The Lady Cavers are ranked #32 out of 47 in the 6A level. Soccer in Oregon is a competitive sport, collecting heaps of interest from people and students. The Lady Cavers are not the only team in the Southwest conference that is struggling to win games. Willamette, Roseburg, and South Eugene are all teams sitting in the thirties for rankings, along with GPHS.
GPHS played #4 Sheldon on Sept. 25, 2023 at home. They tied with the strong Sheldon team, showing great promise for the rest of the season. The young Sheldon Irish are 6-1-0, with their only tie to the Lady Cavers. Last year's Sheldon team went 10-1-1 on the season. Kenzie Kleiner, GPHS junior and varsity defense player compared the 2022-23 team and this year’s Sheldon team “of high quality” due to them being an unstoppable team year after year.
