This year has been full of events and news, from pop culture events such as new movies and popular artist tours to the discovery that Earth’s core is rising quickly, to overseas conflicts in Sudan. There is a lot of tragedy and division in our world today. 2023 has been an active and dynamic year. It is important to look for the good in all situations, no matter how small, especially when it feels like there is no good to be found. It seems like most news organizations only focus on the negative in the world. Instead, Good News brings to light some positivity from this year.
The first piece of Good News is from none other than Taylor Swift. Taylor has been on tour since March 2023. While on tour, she has made an impact by donating to food banks as she travels the United States. She has been doing this noiselessly as she stops in different cities on her route. This has caught the attention of fans and media outlets everywhere, which has brought awareness to the food depravity crisis in America. Sophie Caldwell with The Today News says, “One in eight Southern Nevada residents are experiencing food insecurity. The hope is that the media attention around Swift’s gift will raise awareness about food insecurity.” It is important to help those around us and, if you can, you should. According to Tami Luhby with CNN News, “Swift’s donation in March allowed the network to send several tractor-trailers filled with 40,000 pounds of fresh produce to its member food banks… It bolstered funding for programs aimed at combating hunger, such as helping eligible children gain access to free and reduced-price school meals and senior citizens obtain food stamps.” This is great news for the people who need these resources available and Taylor Swift has helped to make a great impact.
The second piece of Good News is from Norway. Norway has just completed a large project to rebuild the wildlife environments and habitats in Sveagruva. Sveagruva was a mining town that was used as a resource to get coal. The government in Norway decided to restore this town to the natural environment. Andy Corbley with the Good News Network says, “It’s now so empty and pristine that no passing polar bear could ever have imagined humans had ever been there apart from three red houses spared by their monument designation.” This is beneficial to the wildlife that once would have resided there. The polar bear numbers have been on the decline for several years, but according to Corbley, “Polar bears, reindeer, Arctic foxes, and many sea birds are now moving back into the Sveagruva mining town.” This will give these animals restoration to their hunting grounds and old habitats.
The last piece of Good News is in Italy. The company “ Progetto Quid” is a business that prides itself on sustainability and having the best conditions for its workers. They use donated fabrics to make their clothes. They try to employ people who struggle to find jobs elsewhere. According to Brittany Klintworth with The Pulitzer Center, “Their workforce includes formerly incarcerated people, migrants, recovering addicts, and those close to retirement age. The company aims to go beyond solely offering job opportunities. Part of its mission is to create community and provide aid with issues beyond the workplace.” Progetto Quid is an eco-friendly company that works in the fashion industry and emphasizes a fair work environment. This is a very rare occurrence in this industry. This has proven to be great news for the women of this company.
While this year has been filled with turbulence and conflict, there is also a lot of good to be found. Always look for the silver lining, no matter how thin. The good in the world unites us all and just because it seems as though there is no good left doesn’t mean that it is true. I hope that these positive moments have brought some joy and hope back to your perspectives.
