In this article, Dante will talk about your Caveman football team.
The Grants Pass Cavemen varsity football team this year is a tight-knit group of kids that has lots of chemistry. The team is led once again by head coach Brad Page. The Cavemen are part of the 6A Special District 1, meaning they are the teams in the southwestern part of Oregon’s 6A football. The Cavemen are on a majority home game schedule, meaning they have five home games and four away games. The Cavemen lost some talented players from last season but are still a talented group looking to make another run to the playoffs, in hopes of bringing a state championship back to Grants Pass.
This year, the Cavemen will play most of the same teams they played in the previous year, including their rival, the Roseburg Indians, for their senior night. Their first league game was against the South Salem Saxons at home on Sept. 15, The Cavemen are loaded with talent in the backfield at the running back position with their two running backs: Gage Blay, and Pete Amotai. Sophomore quarterback Nathan Basset will lead the Cavemen into the season as the starting QB.
The captains of the team are the backbone of the team, with four of the five captains playing on both sides of the football. They are giving their all to the team and leaving no doubt on the field whilst playing. The captains for the team are: running back/ linebacker Gage Blay(Senior #22). Linebacker Bruxston Leair (Senior #44). O/D Lineman Dante Pierce (Senior #56). Free safety Cole Carnes (Senior #9). Tight end/Defensive end Connor Johnston (Junior #18). These players were chosen by their peers and coaches to lead this Grants Pass football team into the promised land. In an interview with the Daily Courier, Blay said,“this is the best I’ve ever felt for any sport…. I think this team can do great things." The Cavemen look to prove the doubters wrong about them being a one-hit wonder.
The Grants Pass offense is coordinated by head coach Brad Page, with assistance from his coaches: Wes Cox (O-line/Special team), Chris Martinez (QBs), and, Dave Polen (RBs), for the offensive side of the ball. The defensive side of the ball sees Scott Wakefield as the defensive coordinator, Jameson Davis (D-line), Trent Thompson (DB’s), Jason Lovell (Kickers). Before the season started, the Daily Courier interviewed head coach Brad Page and some of the players from the team. Brad Page said about the team: “I think, in a lot of ways, we’ve evolved, and in some areas we’re better than last year. I think we can get back to where we want to be.'' With the knowledge that the coaches bring to the table, there's no doubt that the Cavemen are going to be a team to watch out for.
With many weapons on the field at all times on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, the Cavemen will be a sight to see. Come down on Friday nights to Mel Ingram Field and support your Caveman football players, in front of their hometown and die-hard Grants Pass football fans, friends, and family. Behind head coach Brad Page, his fleet of coaches, as well the captains and players, the Cavemen will look to make their second run to the playoffs in two years.
