In this article, Tessa will tell readers about activities for the new season.
Autumn is finally here! The trees are changing colors, the weather is cooling down, and leaves on the ground are preparing to crunch when stepped on. Our hoodies and sweaters have been waiting for months to make an appearance again, and many people have been looking forward to their cozy clothing. Here is a list of suggestions on how to take advantage of the season.
One of the most obvious activities for fall, and especially Halloween, is pumpkin carving. Starting at the end of August and the beginning of September, stores slowly begin to sell pumpkins. The most common pumpkin for carving is orange, but white pumpkins are a better option if you want to paint pumpkins. Along with carving and painting pumpkins, you can also decorate your house with pumpkin decorations, whether they are real pumpkins or knick-knacks. Fake pumpkin decorations are convenient since they will not go bad, but they lack the creativity of decorating real pumpkins.
A common activity during fall is visiting a pumpkin patch. Fort Vannoy Farms has a pumpkin patch every year where visitors can choose their own pumpkin for 50 cents per pound. They also offer an eight-acre corn maze– and a haunted one for Halloween– that is open every day in Oct., starting on Oct. 1. Their haunted corn maze is open on Oct. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, and 28 from 8 pm to 11 pm. According to their website, “Other events and activities at the Fall Festival include a Cow Train Ride, The Pumpkin Chunker, Apple Cannon, Pumpkin Painting, Petting Zoo, Hayrides, and more.” They also offer hot chocolate and other snacks that attendees can have while in the corn maze.
The best time to pick apples is late summer through late October, which makes apple picking a great fall activity. A couple of orchards where you can pick apples in Oregon are Valley View Orchard in Ashland and Kiyokawa Family Orchards in Parkdale. You can use your apples for a variety of creations and other activities. Apple pie, apple cake, bobbing for apples, and making caramel apples are a few activities involving apples. Another option is drying them. Properly dried apples keep for about six months and are a great snack for those who are are in a hurry.
What better time to curl up with a cup of tea and a book than in cooler weather? Few things are better than reading a book while the rain is pouring down outside and hitting the window. With school having started back up, reading can be a great way to destress. According to the University of Minnesota, “A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. It works better and faster than other relaxation methods, such as listening to music or drinking a hot cup of tea.” Reading can be calming because it takes people to a literary world that can take them away from the stress of daily life.
After the neverending heat and sweat of summer, the cold fall weather can be a relief. Decorating, going to a pumpkin patch, picking apples, and reading a book can help people to take advantage of the cooler weather while it is here.
