Spooky month is here, which means it is time to start buying costumes for Halloween on October 31. Many people enjoy Halloween for the excuse of eating as much candy as they want, dressing up as their favorite characters, matching costumes, and decorating their houses with pumpkins and fake cobwebs. The main element of Halloween, however, is the costumes. Here is a list of costumes that are specific to 2023.
Barbie and Ken
Barbie and Ken
The Barbie movie is the highest-grossing movie of 2023, so we had to start this with one of the most iconic costume combos: Barbie and Ken. Ryan Gosling himself expressed his excitement for seeing Barbie costumes to The Hollywood Reporter: “This is my dream. I've always wanted to make a character that people might go out for Halloween as.” There are many options for these two. One option is to opt for classic costumes to match the first Barbie and Ken, but the new Barbie movie has many options that appear in the movie alone. There are the iconic rollerblading outfits Barbie and Ken wore when they first entered the real world. Another option is the Western outfits they wore a few minutes later. If you want to be a Barbie all by yourself, there is the light pink plaid dress she wore at the beginning of the film. On the flip side, the most iconic costume to wear as a lone Ken is his “Fauxjo Mojo Mink” outfit– complete with the Metallica font fanny pack with “Ken” written on it.

Disney’s most recent live-action adaptation of their classic movies is The Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid has been a popular movie since the cartoon version was released in 1989 and is a popular Halloween costume each year. With the live-action release this year, Ariel’s costume is an even more popular costume choice for 2023. Other options if you do not want to be a mermaid are Sebastian, Ursula, and Flounder.
Mario
Mario
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is another popular movie of 2023, so it would not be surprising to see people dressed up as Mario for Halloween. If you are in a friend group or duo, you could dress up as any combination of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Bowser, Yoshi, and Toad or Toadette. If you are a couple, you could do Princess Peach and Bowser, since she was definitely into him in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While dressed up as the characters, you could turn it into a Mario Halloween party and play different Mario games together.

Wednesday was released on Netflix on Nov. 23, 2022, so this is the first year where you can dress up as Wednesday for Halloween. The show was on Netflix’s top ten shows for three months. According to Forbes, “Wednesday is #1 with 1.3 billion hours viewed as of a few days ago.” The article was published on Dec. 29, 2022. With the popularity of Wednesday, it would not be surprising to see costumes from the show.
