In this article, Rylie Revercomb talks about some of the most underrated movies of the summer.
The summer of 2023 was arguably one of the best summers for the cinemas. People were flocking in all over the world to see Barbie and, with the release of Oppenheimer; the number of people going to the movies doubled. The thing is: there were so many other movies-- movies that didn’t get half as much publicity as was expected. So, instead of talking about the overrated movies, we are going to take a peek at the less talked-about movies of the summer.
At the top of the list is TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. This movie did well but, compared to the previously mentioned movies, it does not look as appealing. The movie follows the plot of four turtle brothers searching for acceptance and, of course, having to fight a few bad guys to get it. It is comedic, has lots of action and, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is: “The best movie in the entire TMNT franchise.” The movie gained a lot of publicity from die-hard fans of the franchise, with the first teenage voice actors for the turtles, the classic TMNT references, and the Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse aesthetic… Sadly, this was not enough to gain the kind of attention that Barbie and Oppenheimer managed to grab. The movie is underrated, and it deserves a lot more attention than it got.
Another movie that was sadly shoved aside, was the fifth installment in a loved series, the new Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny movie. According to critics, it did very well in theaters, with some even saying that it was better than its predecessors. Alas, not even our favorite whip-wielding hero could stand up to the popularity of Barbie at the box office. The movie had a big budget, and because of how much money they spent on it they needed to make at least $600 million dollars to make it even… yet they only made about $333 million. Disney lost a lot of money on the film, and this film was not the only one to struggle this summer.
What’s this? Another struggling Disney movie? That’s right. Not only was Indiana Jones a huge flop this summer, but Disney’s other major film flopped, too. This movie was hyped up on ads across all streaming platforms, which gave Disney high hopes that everyone would be dying to see it. That’s right: the Haunted Mansion movie was also released this summer, and most people did not even notice it. Sadly, this has been happening with all of Disney’s films over the past year, but Haunted Mansion hurt the most for the company. According to Disney Dining, “The film lost the studio another $225 million, bringing Disney’s total to a nearly $2 billion loss at the box office over the past 15 months.” The company has been going in a downward spiral, and what didn’t help this summer was the fact that Barbie was released, and at the worst time possible for Disney.
Last, but not least, on the list of underrated summer movies was the newest Mission Impossible movie. The film, unlike the others, did not flop. In fact, it was a huge success, raking in around $567 million dollars. However, even though the movie did well, it was not well-known by American teenagers. Most people who went to watch the movie were adults or long-time fans of the franchise. The movie did not do well for teenagers or young adults. It was not even half as popular as the summer's highest-grossing film, and most people who are asked about the movie do not even know that it was released. Alas, yet another summer movie that was overshadowed by the big, bad Barbie Movie.
That’s it. That’s the list of the summer’s most underrated movies-- at least, compared to Barbie. So many of these movies had so much potential, and it is a shame that they were not given as much attention. Perhaps, when these movies are released on streaming services, they will gain the attention they deserve.
