Though the school year has just barely started, the GPHS Theatre Department has already begun rehearsals for the fall production of You Can't Take It With You, written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. This roughly 120-minute play tells the story of the family of Martin Vanderhof. He has adopted the mantra that "You can't take it with you", so live life to the fullest instead of focusing on how much money you have. Performed by GPHS students in the Performing Arts Center, the show opens on Oct. 27, and will continue on the 28 and 29, as well as Nov. 3, 4, and 5.
Concord Theatricals describes the show as such: "The family of Martin Vanderhof lives 'just around the corner from Columbia University — but don’t go looking for it.' Grandpa, as Martin is more commonly known, is the paterfamilias of a large and extended family of charming eccentrics." Grandpa (August Duewel) gave up work several years previous, and chose to enjoy life. His large family has chosen the same ideology as him, except for his granddaughter, Alice (Olivia Wainscott). Alice falls in love with Tony Kirby (Seth Imel), but fears that the two families will never understand each other. The rest of the family includes Alice's parents Penny (Samantha Reynolds) and Paul (Shawn Jones), her sister Essie (Anabelle Gossett-Stern), Essie's husband Ed (Nathaniel Lee), and of course, Tony's parents Mr. Kirby (Sam Ventura) and Mrs. Kirby (Be Bretko).
The cast and crew work together to create a masterpiece, with lively characters, incredible set pieces, and props galore. The show draws in the audience, allowing them to feel like they are really in the world, watching the events of this crazy family unfold. Eljay Wagerle (Mr. Kolenkhov) said that it has been "...really fun getting to know the future thespians and it's a cast that can go above and beyond in their abilities. It's also just a great comedic show that everyone needs to watch." Through several character work days, the actors have worked on truly bringing their characters to life in a way that is understandable and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the show does not last forever, and the audience does have to leave after the show is done.
Wayd Drake, in addition to directing the show, built the set, perfectly capturing the family and all their various exploits. Produced by Julia Cuppy, with Jay Grimm as Stage Manager, the show definitely won't go up in flames. The theater season is starting off with a bang, and it'll be remembered for a while.
Don't miss You Can't Take It With You, starting Oct. 27. For more information about the show, follow GPHS Theatre on Instagram @gphstheatre and go to the website gphstheatre.com to get tickets.
